💡 Today's US market in three lines
① Today's three stocks: Talen Energy · Vistra · Ciena — two power producers that rallied on a Google nuclear deal, and an optical networking maker that jumped with AI data-center spending.
② On October 6, the S&P 500 rose +0.58% to a record 7,818.93, the Nasdaq +0.45% to a record close, and the Dow +0.49%. 91 of the 129 ETFs in our universe closed higher, and 10 of the 11 sector SPDRs rose.
③ Utilities rose +5.59% and nuclear stocks +5.50%, while genomics fell -6.50% and biotech -3.39%.
Today's Sector Relative Strength (RS)

- The S&P 500 set a record. Nuclear power led the day. Biotech gave back its gains.
- The S&P 500 closed at 7,818.93, up +0.58% or 44.98 points. It was the index's first record close since August 13, when it ended at 7,798.99. The Nasdaq rose +0.45%, or 122.48 points, to another record at 27,599.79. The Dow gained +0.49%, or 253.38 points, to 51,521.28. Small caps lagged. The Russell 2000 fund (IWM) fell -0.72%, while the equal-weight S&P 500 fund (RSP) rose +0.57%. Growth and value moved together, with the Russell 1000 Growth fund (IWF) up +0.65% and the Russell 1000 Value fund (IWD) up +0.55%.
- Breadth was solid: 91 of the 129 funds in our universe closed higher and 38 closed lower. Utilities (+2.98%) led the sector SPDRs by a wide margin, followed by consumer discretionary (+1.18%) and real estate (+1.06%). Health care was the only sector to fall, by -0.17%.
- The 10-year Treasury yield eased four basis points to 5.27%. That is still near its highest level in about 24 years. WTI crude futures settled up +0.54% at $89.91 a barrel, and gold rose +0.86% to $4,192.70. The VIX fell to 15.01. Lower yields gave investors room to buy, and the Google–Constellation deal told them where.
Today's Leading Sectors TOP 5
- Basis: top 5 by 1-month RS rank on the 'Sector RS (US)' sheet — 129-ETF universe, October 6, 2026. Cybersecurity and AI chips tie at 96; cybersecurity is listed. Daily moves are measured from Yahoo closing prices. Trend columns compare price to its 1-month, 1-quarter, and 1-year moving averages.

- Three of the five leaders rose, and all five trade above their 1-month, 1-quarter, and 1-year averages. The two big chip funds slipped. Fabless chips and cybersecurity carried the group. Over one month, BUG leads our entire universe at +17.79%, and SMHX is second at +15.62%. Cybersecurity is a new name on this list.
Why They're Strong — Sector Issues

· Chips (SMHX · SOXX · SMH) — Fabless chips rose +1.92%, while the iShares semiconductor fund was flat at -0.01% and VanEck's semiconductor fund dipped -0.22%. Chip designers gained. Marvell rose +5.81% on the day of its investor day, where it laid out long-term targets for AI data-center connections. Broadcom added +3.67% and AMD +2.80%. Equipment makers fell. KLA lost -4.54%, Lam Research -3.44%, and Applied Materials -2.21%. Intel dropped -3.18% and Micron -1.73%. Those losses kept SOXX flat. SOXX is up +3.88% over five sessions.

· Meme stocks (MEME) — Roundhill's meme-stock fund rose +0.95% and keeps the top rank. Its holdings split by theme. AI and space names gained. Nebius rose +7.44%, Applied Optoelectronics +7.07%, and AST SpaceMobile +8.01%. Moderna, a large holding, fell -7.75% with biotech. The fund is up +5.42% over five sessions.

Fortinet, Palo Alto, and CrowdStrike all set one-year closing highs. We found no single headline for the move. The group has climbed steadily for weeks, and BUG is up +7.24% over five sessions.
1-Month RS Trend

- The 45-day chart tracks utilities, two nuclear funds, genomics, and biotech. Virtus Reaves utilities (UTES) sat at 1 on August 12 and has climbed to 72, its high for the period. Range's nuclear fund (NUKZ) peaked at 71 on August 14, fell to 16 on September 28, and is back at 51. VanEck's nuclear fund (NLR) dropped from 90 on August 26 to 2 on September 25 and has only reached 13. Genomics (GNOM) peaked at 99 on September 17 and holds at 88. The biotech SPDR (XBI) fell from 88 on September 1 to 17.
RS Breakdown Warnings (big 5-day drops)
· iShares U.S. pharmaceuticals (IHE) fell -42 points in five sessions, from 71 to 29. iShares biotechnology (IBB) lost -33 points, VanEck pharmaceuticals (PPH) -26, crude oil (USO) -20, and the health care SPDR (XLV) -20.
· Health care is losing ground on all fronts. IHE is down -3.83% over five sessions and IBB -3.76%. We left out blockchain, farm-tech, and on-chain economy funds, because their sheet ranks disagree with our five-day calculation.
RS Rebound Signals (sharp bounces off the bottom)
· Global X copper miners (COPX) rebounded +30 points in five sessions, from 13 to 43. Global X e-commerce (EBIZ) gained +28 points, Range nuclear (NUKZ) +22, the consumer discretionary SPDR (XLY) +22, and the utilities SPDR (XLU) +17.
· Nuclear and utilities show up here as well as on the rising list. NUKZ is up +4.53% over five sessions and XLU +3.65%. COPX and EBIZ barely moved in price, so their gains came mostly from other funds falling.
Today's Top Rising Sectors TOP 5 (by 1-day %)
- Basis: top 5 by October 6 closing move — 91 of 129 rose on the day. RS ranks from the 'Sector RS (US)' sheet.
| ETF | 1-Day | RS Rank 1M | Short-Term | Mid-Term | Long-Term |
| Virtus Reaves Utilities (UTES) | +5.59% | 78 | 🔺 | 🔺 | 🔽 |
| VanEck Uranium and Nuclear (NLR) | +5.50% | 22 | 🔺 | 🔽 | 🔽 |
| Global X Uranium (URA) | +4.01% | 15 | 🔽 | 🔽 | 🔽 |

| Range Nuclear Renaissance (NUKZ) | +3.54% | 57 | 🔺 | 🔽 | 🔽 |
- All five are power stories. Four of them hold nuclear plants or uranium miners. AIPO is the only one that also ranks in the top tier, at 91. NLR and URA still rank near the bottom, so one strong day has not fixed their longer trend.
Why They Rose — Sector Issues

· Nuclear power and utilities (UTES · NLR · URA · NUKZ · AIPO) — Google and Constellation Energy signed a 20-year power purchase agreement. It pays for upgrades at 11 existing Constellation reactors in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. The work is expected to add 890 megawatts of round-the-clock power to the PJM grid. Constellation jumped +12.25% to $300.40. Talen Energy rose +12.43% and Vistra +10.77%, though neither company is part of the deal. Uranium names followed. Cameco gained +6.35%, Centrus Energy +8.80%, and Oklo +7.17%. In AIPO, Quanta Services rose +5.29% and GE Vernova +3.96%. The deal shows tech companies will pay for power from plants that already run. UTES is up +7.05% over five sessions.
Leading Sectors: Nuclear Power, Utilities, Cybersecurity
- ① Power is the new bottleneck trade. Google did not wait for new reactors. It paid to squeeze more output from old ones. Investors bought every company that owns nuclear plants in PJM, the grid that serves many East Coast data centers.
- ② Security software kept climbing. Cybersecurity funds rose for another day, and three large names closed at one-year highs. Chip designers gained, while equipment makers fell. Investors bought the companies closest to AI spending and sold those tied to factory orders.
- ③ Biotech broke hard. Genomics fell -6.50%, its worst day among the 129 funds. Twist Bioscience fell -18.55% and 10x Genomics -17.47%. We found no single headline. The group had run up fast, and GNOM is still up +5.20% over one month. This looks like profit-taking.
- ④ The last report covered the October 5 close. Its three picks, measured from that close to Tuesday's: Twist Bioscience -18.55%, Schrodinger -11.35%, and GRAIL -10.90%. The S&P 500 rose +0.58% over the same session. All three trailed the index by a wide margin. The picks rode the genomics rally, and they fell hardest when it reversed. Recorded as is.

Talen Energy (TLN) — 1-Month RS 95: A Nuclear Plant Next to a Data Center

| RS 1D | RS 5D | RS 1M | 1M Return | Held By |
| 100 | 99 | 95 | +17.7% | Virtus Reaves Utilities · Range Nuclear Renaissance · VanEck Onchain Economy |
- Up +12.43% to $373.11, and +18.51% over five sessions. Talen owns the Susquehanna nuclear plant in Pennsylvania, which sits on the PJM grid. It already sells power from that plant to Amazon. Tuesday's jump was a read-through from the Google deal. Talen was not a party. Investors priced in more deals of the same kind for other plant owners. For the quarter ended June 30, revenue rose +18.6% to $747 million from $630 million. The company posted an operating loss of $72 million against operating income of $66 million a year earlier. The net loss was $92 million, or $2.00 a share. The stock is still down -0.5% this year, below its one-year high of $445.84. The Talen Energy stock forecast depends on whether it can sign its own long-term deal with a large tech buyer.
Vistra (VST) — 1-Month RS 87: The Largest Competitive Power Producer

| RS 1D | RS 5D | RS 1M | 1M Return | Held By |
| 99 | 98 | 87 | +7.5% | Virtus Reaves Utilities · Global X U.S. Electrification · SPDR Utilities Sector |
- Up +10.77% to $160.50, and +13.97% over five sessions. Vistra runs gas, coal, and nuclear plants, including the Comanche Peak nuclear site in Texas and plants across PJM. Like Talen, it rose on the Google deal without being part of it. For the quarter ended June 30, revenue fell -5.5% to $4.02 billion from $4.25 billion. Operating income still rose +7.4% to $553 million from $515 million. Net income was $305 million, or $0.76 a share, against $327 million a year earlier. The stock is down -0.5% this year and well below its one-year high of $210.85. The Vistra stock forecast rests on whether higher power prices and new contracts lift earnings, not just the share price.
Ciena (CIEN) — 1-Month RS 99: The Optical Links Between AI Data Centers

| RS 1D | RS 5D | RS 1M | 1M Return | Held By |
| 100 | 100 | 99 | +38.2% | iShares U.S. Digital Infrastructure and Real Estate · First Trust Dow Jones Internet |
- Up +13.85% to $443.65, and +25.00% over five sessions. Ciena makes optical networking gear that carries data between and inside data centers. Marvell's investor day on Tuesday put AI connection demand back in focus, and optical stocks rose together. Lumentum gained +3.82% and Arista Networks +4.09%. For the fiscal third quarter ended August 1, revenue rose +37.0% to $1.67 billion from $1.22 billion. Operating income climbed to $301.2 million from $73.5 million. Net income was $266.4 million, or $1.83 a share, against $50.3 million, or $0.35, a year earlier. The stock is up +89.7% this year but still below its June high of $627.00. The Ciena stock forecast depends on whether hyperscaler orders keep growing as fast as the stock has.
Talen Energy · Vistra · Ciena Stock Forecast Checkpoints
· Talen Energy stock forecast — The stock jumped on someone else's deal. Watch whether it holds above $331.87, Monday's close. Giving that back would mean the read-through faded.
· Vistra stock forecast — Revenue fell last quarter even as profit rose. Watch whether it holds above $144.89, Monday's close. A gap this large often gets tested within days.
· Ciena stock forecast — The stock is up +38.2% in one month. Watch whether it holds above $389.69, Monday's close. A drop back under that level would erase Tuesday's jump.
What to Watch on Next Week's Calendar
- 10-year Treasury auction and FOMC minutes, Thursday October 8 (2:00 a.m. and 3:00 a.m. KST). The 10-year yield eased to 5.27% on Tuesday, and utilities led the market. Utilities trade like bonds, so weak auction demand would hit them first. The minutes show how many officials favored more hikes.
- Samsung Electronics preliminary third-quarter results and TSMC September sales, Thursday October 8. Both are early reads on AI chip demand. Chip designers rose on Tuesday while equipment makers fell. Strong numbers would back the designers.
- OCP Global Summit, October 12–15 local time in San Jose. The conference covers AI data-center power, cooling, and networking. Ciena and the power producers both rose on data-center demand this week. New spending plans there would test that story.
