[US Stocks Today] Fed Minutes Weigh : AbbVie · Valero · Okeanis Eco Tankers Stock Forecast

by Global Stock Brief 2026. 10. 8.

💡 Today's US market in three lines

① Today's three stocks: AbbVie · Valero · Okeanis Eco Tankers — a drugmaker at a record close, a refiner at a one-year high, and a tanker owner riding record freight rates.

② On October 7, the S&P 500 fell -0.22% to 7,801.77, the Nasdaq -0.22%, and the Dow -0.66%. Only 13 of the 129 ETFs in our universe closed higher, and 10 of the 11 sector SPDRs fell.

③ Natural gas rose +2.70% and pharmaceuticals +1.22%, while uranium fell -4.47% and blockchain -4.32%.

Today's Sector Relative Strength (RS)

Oct 7 Sector RS — 129 ETFs · RRG v2

  • Records gave way to rate worries. Health care held up. Almost everything else slipped.
  • The S&P 500 closed at 7,801.77, down -0.22% or 17.16 points, one day after its record close. The Nasdaq also fell -0.22%, or 61.10 points, to 27,538.69. The Dow lost -0.66%, or 341.41 points, to 51,179.87. Small caps took the hardest hit. The Russell 2000 fund (IWM) fell -1.29%, and the equal-weight S&P 500 fund (RSP) dropped -0.81%. Growth and value fell by similar amounts, with the Russell 1000 Growth fund (IWF) down -0.33% and the Russell 1000 Value fund (IWD) down -0.38%.
  • Breadth was weak: only 13 of the 129 funds in our universe closed higher, 114 closed lower, one was flat, and one did not trade. Health care (+1.03%) was the only sector SPDR to rise. Industrials fell the most at -2.18%, followed by materials (-1.51%) and real estate (-1.29%).
  • The bond market set the tone. The 10-year Treasury yield touched 5.36% during the session, its highest since 2002, before closing near 5.28%. Minutes from the Fed's September meeting said another rate increase would likely be appropriate by year end, with no date attached. WTI crude futures settled down -0.56% at $88.94 a barrel. Gold fell -1.20% to $4,136.70, and Bitcoin dropped about -2.8% to near $83,000. When yields climb this fast, investors cut the riskiest bets first.

Today's Leading Sectors TOP 5

  • Basis: top 5 by 1-month RS rank on the 'Sector RS (US)' sheet — 129-ETF universe, October 7, 2026. Daily moves are measured from Yahoo closing prices. Trend columns compare price to its 1-month, 1-quarter, and 1-year moving averages.
ETF 1-Day RS Rank 1M Short-Term Mid-Term Long-Term
Roundhill Meme Stock (MEME) -2.63% 100 🔺 🔺 🔺
VanEck Fabless Semiconductor (SMHX) -1.36% 99 🔺 🔺 🔺
iShares Semiconductor (SOXX) -1.12% 99 🔺 🔺 🔺
Global X Cybersecurity (BUG) -1.79% 98 🔺 🔺 🔺
VanEck Semiconductor (SMH) -1.18% 97 🔺 🔺 🔺
  • All five leaders fell, yet all five still trade above their 1-month, 1-quarter, and 1-year averages. One down day does not break that kind of trend. Over one month, BUG still leads our entire universe at +17.19%, and SMHX is second at +13.47%. The list is the same five names as Tuesday, only reshuffled.

Why They're Strong — Sector Issues

iShares Semiconductor SOXX Daily

· Chips and meme stocks (SOXX · SMHX · SMH · MEME) — The iShares semiconductor fund fell -1.12% and fabless chips -1.36%. Most large names eased from their highs. Nvidia slipped -0.74% and AMD -0.55%. Arm lost -2.71%, Qualcomm -2.16%, and Applied Materials -1.81%. Micron went the other way, up +4.06%. Roundhill's meme fund fell -2.63%, dragged by AI and space names. Nebius dropped -5.09% and AST SpaceMobile -3.91%. SOXX is still up +2.49% over five sessions and MEME +4.46%.

Global X Cybersecurity BUG Daily

· Cybersecurity (BUG) — Global X's cybersecurity fund fell -1.79% after its run to one-year highs. CrowdStrike lost -4.81%, Palo Alto Networks -3.42%, and Cloudflare -3.39%. Zscaler bucked the move with +0.61%. We found no single headline. Higher yields hit richly valued software first. BUG is up +3.64% over five sessions.

1-Month RS Trend

45-Day RS Trend — 5 Sectors

  • The 45-day chart tracks natural gas, health care, shipping, uranium, and wind. The natural gas fund (UNG) sat at 1 on August 5, peaked at 98 on September 24, and now holds at 90. The health care SPDR (XLV) climbed from 38 to a high of 84 on September 28 and stands at 80. Global shipping (BOAT) dipped to 69 on August 27, peaked at 99 on September 10, and is at 84. Global X uranium (URA) went from 96 on August 27 to 1 on September 25 and has only reached 2. First Trust wind (FAN) peaked at 64 on September 9 and is back at 26.

RS Breakdown Warnings (big 5-day drops)

· The biotech SPDR (XBI) fell -30 points in five sessions, from 63 to 33. The US oil fund (USO) lost -26 points, from 96 to 70.

· Biotech kept sliding even on a day when big drugmakers rose. XBI is down -4.72% over five sessions. We left out blockchain, on-chain economy, hydrogen, and clean-energy funds, because their sheet ranks disagree with our five-day calculation.

RS Rebound Signals (sharp bounces off the bottom)

· Global X lithium and battery (LIT) rebounded +31 points in five sessions, from 10 to 41. The consumer discretionary SPDR (XLY) gained +30 points, Global X e-commerce (EBIZ) +29, Global X millennial consumer (MILN) +29, and iShares transportation (IYT) +22.

· Consumer names lead this list. XLY is up +2.32% over five sessions and LIT +1.59%. EBIZ and MILN barely moved in price, so their gains came mostly from other funds falling.

Today's Top Rising Sectors TOP 5 (by 1-day %)

  • Basis: top 5 by October 7 closing move — 13 of 129 rose on the day. RS ranks from the 'Sector RS (US)' sheet.
ETF 1-Day RS Rank 1M Short-Term Mid-Term Long-Term
United States Natural Gas (UNG) +2.70% 82 🔺 🔺 🔽
VanEck Pharmaceutical (PPH) +1.22% 44 🔽 🔽 🔺
iShares U.S. Pharmaceuticals (IHE) +1.07% 43 🔽 🔽 🔺
Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) +1.03% 58 🔺 🔺 🔺
VanEck Oil Refiners (CRAK) +0.72% 85 🔺 🔺 🔺
  • Three of the five are health care funds. That is a defensive pattern. The two pharma funds still rank in the bottom half, so this was one good day, not a new trend. CRAK and UNG are the only ones that also rank in the top fifth.

Why They Rose — Sector Issues

SPDR Health Care XLV Daily

· Health care and pharmaceuticals (XLV · PPH · IHE) — Big drugmakers drew the money that left growth stocks. Eli Lilly rose +2.70%, Amgen +2.60%, Pfizer and Gilead +1.82% each, and AbbVie +1.75%. Johnson & Johnson added +1.44%. UnitedHealth was flat at -0.09%. We found no single headline for the group. Drugmakers have steady cash flows, and investors tend to buy them when yields jump. XLV is up only +0.23% over five sessions, so this was a one-day shift.

VanEck Oil Refiners CRAK Daily

· Natural gas, refiners, and tankers (UNG · CRAK · BOAT) — Natural gas futures rose +3.24% to $3.21. We found no single headline for the jump. Refiners gained even as crude slipped. Marathon Petroleum rose +2.29% and Valero +1.16%, a one-year closing high for Valero. Tanker owners also rose. Okeanis Eco Tankers gained +1.37% and Teekay Tankers +0.87%. Attacks on ships near Hormuz and in the Red Sea have kept fuel and freight tight. CRAK is up +3.88% over five sessions.

Leading Sectors: Health Care, Refiners, Tankers

  • ① Rates moved first. The 10-year yield hit its highest level since 2002 during the day, and the Fed minutes kept a year-end hike on the table. Small caps fell -1.29%, and industrials fell -2.18%. Those two groups borrow the most and feel higher rates first.
  • ② Investors hid in drugmakers. Health care was the only sector SPDR to rise. Large pharma names gained, while biotech funds stayed weak. Investors wanted profits today, not trial results later.
  • ③ Power and crypto gave back. Uranium fell -4.47% and VanEck's nuclear fund -3.80%, one day after their big jump on the Google–Constellation deal. Cameco lost -4.25% and Oklo -4.49%. Blockchain fell -4.32% as Bitcoin slid. Bitcoin miners fell hard, with IREN and CleanSpark down -6.27% each. Fast gains reversed fast.
  • ④ The last report covered the October 6 close. Its three picks, measured from that close to Wednesday's: Talen Energy +1.40%, Vistra +3.88%, and Ciena +0.63%. The S&P 500 fell -0.22% over the same session. All three beat the index. Talen and Vistra held their Tuesday jump even as nuclear funds fell. Recorded as is.

AbbVie (ABBV) — 1-Month RS 89: A Drugmaker at a Record Close

AbbVie ABBV Daily

RS 1D RS 5D RS 1M 1M Return Held By
96 81 89 +9.1% Health Care Select Sector SPDR · Global X Aging Population · VanEck Pharmaceutical
  • Up +1.75% to $271.36, a one-year closing high, and +3.73% over five sessions. AbbVie sells the immune drugs Skyrizi and Rinvoq, along with cancer and neuroscience drugs. News reports on Wednesday highlighted two FDA Breakthrough Therapy designations for its experimental cancer drug Temab-A, in colorectal and lung cancer. The drug is not approved anywhere yet. For the quarter ended June 30, revenue rose +10.2% to $16.99 billion from $15.42 billion. Operating income climbed +31.4% to $6.43 billion from $4.89 billion. Net income was $3.61 billion, or $2.03 a share, against $938 million, or $0.52, a year earlier. AbbVie reports third-quarter results on October 30. The AbbVie stock forecast depends on whether Skyrizi and Rinvoq keep growing fast enough to cover older drugs losing patent protection.

Valero Energy (VLO) — 1-Month RS 92: A Refiner at a One-Year High

Valero Energy VLO Daily

RS 1D RS 5D RS 1M 1M Return Held By
92 96 92 +10.8% iShares U.S. Oil & Gas Exploration & Production · VanEck Oil Refiners · Energy Select Sector SPDR
  • Up +1.16% to $424.10, a one-year closing high, and +9.41% over five sessions. Valero is one of the largest independent refiners in the US. It earns the gap between crude prices and the fuels it sells, and that gap has stayed unusually wide this year. Global refining capacity is short, and war has disrupted supply. For the quarter ended June 30, revenue rose +48.8% to $44.48 billion from $29.89 billion. Operating income jumped to $5.20 billion from $997 million. Net income was $3.72 billion, or $12.62 a share, against $714 million, or $2.28, a year earlier. The Valero stock forecast rests on how long refining margins stay this wide.

Okeanis Eco Tankers (ECO) — 1-Month RS 98: Big Tankers at Record Rates

Okeanis Eco Tankers ECO Daily

RS 1D RS 5D RS 1M 1M Return Held By
94 96 98 +25.9% SonicShares Global Shipping
  • Up +1.37% to $88.04, and +8.85% over five sessions. The close sits just below its one-year closing high of $88.60. Okeanis owns 18 crude tankers: 10 Suezmax ships and 8 VLCCs, the largest class. Much of its fleet trades on the spot market, so higher daily rates flow quickly into profit. Daily rates for VLCCs topped $1 million in September, as attacks around Hormuz and the Red Sea cut available ships. For the second quarter, revenue rose to $318.9 million from $93.9 million. Net income was $230.3 million, or $5.90 a share, against $26.9 million, or $0.84, a year earlier. The company declared a quarterly dividend of $5.25 a share. The Okeanis Eco Tankers stock forecast depends on whether freight rates stay high once shipping lanes calm down.

AbbVie · Valero · Okeanis Eco Tankers Stock Forecast Checkpoints

· AbbVie stock forecast — The stock set a record on a weak day. Watch whether it holds above $266.69, Tuesday's close and its prior high. Earnings on October 30 are the next real test.

· Valero stock forecast — The stock is up +9.41% in five sessions. Watch whether it holds above $419.22, Tuesday's close. Slipping back would mean the margin trade is cooling.

· Okeanis Eco Tankers stock forecast — The stock is up +25.9% in one month. Watch whether it breaks above $88.60, its one-year closing high. A close above it would confirm the rate story still has buyers.

What to Watch on Next Week's Calendar

  • 30-year Treasury auction, Friday October 9 (2:00 a.m. KST). The 10-year yield hit its highest level since 2002 on Wednesday. Weak demand at this auction would push long rates higher again. Small caps and industrials fell the most on Wednesday and would feel it first.
  • Big bank and health care earnings, Tuesday October 13 (from 8:00 p.m. KST). JPMorgan opens the third-quarter season, with Wells Fargo, Citi, Goldman Sachs, Johnson & Johnson, and UnitedHealth also due. Health care was Wednesday's only rising sector. Results from J&J and UnitedHealth will show whether that move has earnings behind it.
  • September CPI, Wednesday October 14 (9:30 p.m. KST). The Fed minutes left a year-end hike open. A hot inflation number would make that hike more likely and keep yields high.
