Today's Sector Relative Strength (RS)

Oct 16 Sector RS — 129 ETFs · RRG v2

  • Tech sold off again. Oil climbed. Money left software and chips and went into energy, staples, and utilities.
  • The S&P 500 closed at 7,659.44, down -1.09% or 84.62 points. The Nasdaq fell -2.15%, or 573.00 points, to 26,140.03. The Dow lost -0.34%, or 175.28 points, to 52,002.41. Over five sessions, the Nasdaq is down -4.48% and the S&P 500 -1.95%. Growth took the beating. The Russell 1000 Growth fund (IWF) fell -2.22%, while the Russell 1000 Value fund (IWD) slipped only -0.14%. The equal-weight S&P 500 fund (RSP) lost -0.42% and the Russell 2000 fund (IWM) -1.69%.
  • Breadth turned weak again. Only 38 of the 129 funds in our universe closed higher, and 91 fell. Six of the 11 sector SPDRs rose, led by energy and defensive groups. Energy led at +2.52%, followed by utilities (+1.34%) and consumer staples (+1.08%). Technology fell the most at -3.02%, and communication services lost -1.89%.
  • The worry was about debt behind the AI build-out. Reports said bonds of the data center operator CoreWeave sold off this week, with yields above 15%. Investors asked whether heavily indebted AI infrastructure companies can repay that debt as borrowing costs rise. Fed Chair Warsh did not rule out an October rate hike after hot inflation data. The 10-year Treasury yield held at 5.10%. The VIX jumped +21.45% to 19.99. Brent crude rose +3.56% to $109.69 a barrel and briefly touched $110, its first visit there since May, according to CNN. WTI gained +1.09% to $99.04. Natural gas futures fell -3.68%. Gold rose +0.40% to $4,186.70, and Bitcoin slipped -0.66% to near $81,598.

Why They Rose — Sector Issues

First Trust Natural Gas FCG Daily

· Natural gas producers (FCG) — Gas stocks rose even though gas prices fell. Antero Resources gained +6.06%, Range Resources +4.35%, and EQT +3.53%, while natural gas futures lost -3.68%. Many of these companies also pump oil and gas liquids, so higher crude helps them too. We found no single company headline behind the move. FCG is up +4.74% over five sessions.

Global X MLP and Energy Infrastructure MLPX Daily

· Pipelines and crude (MLPX · USO · XOP · XLE) — Pipeline owners moved with the producers. Targa Resources rose +4.37%, Kinder Morgan +4.20%, Williams +2.98%, and ONEOK +2.93%. Brent's jump toward $110 lifted crude-linked funds across the board. We found no single supply headline for the oil move. MLPX is still down -0.54% over one month.

Leading Sectors: Oil Producers, Natural Gas, Pipelines

  • ① Oil producers took the lead. IEO ranks 98 and rose +2.46% on a day when 91 funds fell. Along with XLV, it is one of only two top-five leaders above all three moving averages. Crude near $100 a barrel keeps producer cash flow high.
  • ② Gas producers and pipelines followed. FCG and MLPX topped the daily list, but they rank only 60 and 54 on the sheet. They are climbing from low levels. Two strong days do not make a trend yet.
  • ③ Tech took the hit. Micron lost -5.63%, AMD -5.95%, and Broadcom -4.52%. Nvidia held up better at -1.43%. Crypto stocks fell with them. Strategy lost -9.56% and Coinbase -5.79%. Defensive stocks went the other way. Coca-Cola rose +2.07%, Procter & Gamble +1.45%, and Walmart +0.80%.
  • ④ The last report covered the October 15 close. Its three picks, measured from that close to Friday's: Etsy -4.53%, Bath & Body Works -1.47%, and Ollie's -2.49%. The S&P 500 fell -1.09% over the same session. All three trailed the index. Etsy closed at $85.14, back below its $87.03 checkpoint. Bath & Body Works held its $18.95 checkpoint at $20.14, and Ollie's held $88.33 at $93.18. Recorded as is.

Antero Resources · ConocoPhillips · Ovintiv Stock Forecast Checkpoints

· Antero Resources stock forecast — The stock jumped while gas prices fell. Watch whether it holds above $37.54, the October 13 close. Falling back below it would leave Friday's jump as a one-day move.

· ConocoPhillips stock forecast — The stock just set a new high. Watch whether it holds above $142.34, the October 14 closing high. A drop below it would cancel the breakout.

· Ovintiv stock forecast — The stock also set a new high. Watch whether it holds above $66.97, the September 15 closing high. Losing that level would undo the breakout.
